As an outsider, and someone who had only read about these massive colorful story telling picture boards (or walls actually), the paintings looked breathtaking. But the local people are so used to it that they never pause for a moment to see.

Dominated primarily by the colorful Latin art style, each wall mimicked inspirational stories. To a culture so diverse as that of San Francisco, they seem to be an extremely powerful way of communicating social and religious messages to the local population.

In authentic dress and paraphernalia in front selling bracelets and not-so-easily-found charms, he plays the Djembe. The Djembe (pronounced Jem-Bay) is an authentic west African drum. Although a Conga (pronounced as kunga) player, he is still picking up the beats on the Djembe. The Conga is a Cuban drum of African origin and gets its name from the region where is it originated and is traditionally played, Congo, in Africa.

Over fifty and still going strong, Omar prides himself in being a true artist. The music, he says, comes from his heart, the songs from his life! Living mainly off the streets, Omar has traveled all over the country with his guitar. With an uniquely painted instrument and a CD with his own songs, Omar knows that no one is ever hungry in San Francisco. “You have to be a real fool to live hungry here”.

San Francisco street artists – Experience This

Update: San Francisco Street Artists (0507-001) on Photoduniya.com

They stop the crowd to “Experience This“, a nebulous spirit of rock and roll – vocals, drums, percussion and the bass. A cheering crowd could not stop till late after 10:00 PM on the weekend, when the group ran out of battery to power their amps.

Its a high spirited, extremely experienced, completely synchronized and above all, a fun group to be around. Playing the drums in the picture is Rob (from the Hendrix Band) and Johnny on the bass.

The images were done well past 10:00 PM at Union Square in San Francisco, on Nikon D200 using remote flash and Cokin 80A and 17 – 35mm f/2.8. The images were shot and published with the verbal permission of the artists.

I shall post more of their images on the Projects section of Photoduniya.com soon.
