The Nikon company was first founded in July 1917 as Nippon Kōgaku. Sales of Nikon imaging products began in Australia in 1959 with distribution through Maxwell Photo Optics. Nippon Kōgaku became Nikon Corporation in 1988. Nikon Australia Pty Ltd was then established in Australia on 17th October 2006, with operations commencing on 1st November 2006.
